About

Welcome to The Synaptic Press, I’m Faith.

I’m a freelance science journalist specializing in neuroscience, healthcare, and disability reporting. I have a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and previously worked for over six years as a paramedic in emergency services. I now use my experience as a healthcare provider and a Deaf woman to craft engaging science and healthcare stories for the general public.

My work has appeared in Psyche, Grey Matters Journal, and other healthcare publications. I welcome work and personal inquires through the contacts below.

My Journey to Science Journalism

I’ll spare my whole life story for another post, but there are a few things you should know. I was born completely deaf in my right ear with normal hearing in my left. I grew up communicating with spoken English until I was introduced to the Deaf community and American Sign Language at seventeen. Around that same time, I signed up for an EMT-Basic certification course. I fell in love with EMS and moved from my beautiful home state of Montana down to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue 911 jobs in the big city. My career as a first responder was incredibly rewarding and lasted nearly seven years. In that time I advanced my education from an EMT, to a paramedic, and ultimately to holding a B.S. in Neuroscience. Then life took a turn.

In the fall of my senior year, I lost the large majority of the hearing in my remaining ear overnight, and began an unexpected journey of navigating chronic illness. I now identify proudly as a Deaf woman, and communicate through both ASL and spoken English. Having a background in science and healthcare was crucial to understanding my own health and mitigating fear amidst a sea of complex medical tests and terms. That’s why I chose to pursue science writing. Through writing I can empower others in their journeys by translating advanced topics into accessible language. I draw on my personal and clinical experience to create neuroscience, healthcare, and disability content. I write blog articles, reported features, educational content, and more. But no matter what form it takes, my writing is inspired by my own journey and my love for science.
